Costumes

Beginners

The Roberts Academy has a simple beginner costume which is available for hire through the school. This comprises of a royal blue circle skirt lined in black, with a white edging, and white satin sash. These are worn together with a black t-shirt and either socks for children or tights for adults.

Teams Dress

The Roberts Academy team costumes are owned by the school and are available for hire for a small fee, in order to help reduce costs for our families. These are worn by all competitors in Ceili and other team competitions, and are also available as an option for any dancer who wishes to wear them for solo competition.

The dress is made in the school colours - black, blue & white, with a design of traditional celtic knotwork. This is worn with the matching shawl, headband and either socks or tights depending on the dancers age and/or preference.

Solo Costumes

Solo costumes are a dancer's own individual costume and are therefore unique. Many second hand costumes are available to help keep costs down, though once dancers reach the top levels of competition they may prefer to purchase a custom-made dress.

There is now huge variety of styles and designs, ranging from traditional and simple to modern and very glitzy, so there is something for every taste. Typically though the dress will feature an A line skirt (sometimes stiffened, sometimes soft & layered) and will be decorated with appliqued and embroidered Celtic style designs.

Boys Costumes

Most boys in Irish dancing today opt to wear plain black trousers (as opposed to the kilts of yesteryear!). These are most commonly worn with a shirt and waistcoat. For teams competitions this would be in the school colours. However for solo competition, many boys opt to wear brightly coloured or patterned shirts.

Performance Costumes

The school also has a collection of troupe and performance costumes which are worn specially for our displays and shows. These are owned and cared for by the school and dancers borrow them for the performance. Our main troupe costume comprises of a black skirt lined with blue, and a black velvet bodice with matching celtic cuffs.
