Roberts Academy of Irish Dancing

The School

The Roberts Academy is based in Adelaide, South Australia, with classes currently held in Windsor Gardens, Mitchell Park, Glenelg North and Port Pirie. The school aims to teach your children to be the best dancers they can be, while having fun along the way and buidling self esteem and other skills which will benefit them outside of dance.

Dancers from the Roberts AcademyThe school is run by Andrew Roberts TCRG, and was founded in 2008 after he successfully passed the teacher's exam first time. The school is registered with AIDA (Australian Irish Dancing Association) and An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha in Ireland (the Irish Dancing Commission), allowing registered dancers the opportunity to compete both locally, nationally and even internationally.

From small beginnings and just two locations, the school has since grown with many young dancers now climbing the competition ranks. The school has been represented every year at the State and National Championships in both Solo and Ceili (team) divisions with some outstanding results. In 2010 the Roberts Academy was represented in solos for the first time at the World Championships in Glasgow.

The school currently has around 50 registered dancers in the Adelaide classes, ranging from approx age 4 to adult and in all levels from absolute beginner right up to Champion level dancers. We usually take beginners from the age of 5 though this is dependant on the child, as some are ready to start earlier (particularly if they have an older sibling who already dances). We have no upper age limit either - we have a large number of dancers who have started with us as adult beginners (age 18 and above) and do not place any limits on a dancer due to age. The Roberts Academy also has a number of boys and men within the school - the most of any South Australian school.

In addition to the local Adelaide classes, the school also has a workshop location in Darwin. Andrew travels to up on a regular basis throughout the year to work with dancers in the NT in order to allow them a chance to become registered with AIDA and therefore compete. Numerous dancers have already competed successfully with more planning to in the future.

In addition to the competition aspect, the school enjoys many opportunities for non competitive displays and performances. These allow the dancers a chance to learn and show off more modern, show style pieces like those seen in Riverdance. We also have several social events through the year including our Start of Year barbecue and regular group activities, allowing us all to kick back and relax in a more social, non-dance setting!
