St Patrick’s Day is nearly here!

It’s that time of year again! St Patrick’s Day is fast approaching! The Roberts Academy has a busy calendar for the weekend, with displays booked on Friday and Saturday as well as St Patrick’s Day itself which falls on the Sunday this year.

As in previous years we will be performing at the Irish Club on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as taking part in the annual St Patrick’s Day parade which winds through the city and finishes on Carrington Street. Our dancers will also be performing at several private functions for various Aged Care facilities around Adelaide. These displays always go down well with the residents and allow our dancers the chance to give something back to the community.

If you fancy seeing a bit of Irish dancing, and celebrating St Paddy’s Day in style, make sure you pop along to one of the venues shown below! And if you’re already hosting your own even, but still need dancers, we do still have some times available, so why not email us!

RAID Dancer wins Sports Person of the Month!

We just wanted to say a huge congratulations to Niamh Gardner, who was awarded Port Pirie’s “Sports Person of the Month” for her achievements in Irish dancing. Niamh lives in Port Pirie and attends weekly classes there, as well as making a 5 hour round trip to Adelaide and back several times a month for extra practices. The hard work has paid off as Niamh placed 6th at the State Championships and 26th at Nationals in 2012, and she is already working hard ready for 2013!

Happy New Year!

We’d just like to take the opportunity to wish all our dancers, families, friends and supporters a very Happy New Year! We wish you all the best for a very successful and FUN 2013.

RAID dancers take to the Festival Theatre Stage

Three young dancers from the Roberts Academy were lucky enough to dance at Adelaide’s Festival Theatre recently, as part of the Festival of Music. The three brothers took to the same stage as Riverdance, in front of a packed audience.

Gerard, Colm and Patrick O’Connor successfully auditioned back in May, and have been polishing and perfecting their routine for months. They performed a rhythmic hard shoe piece, starting out to music then finishing off with an A Capella Finale. The piece was choreographed specially for the event by their teacher, Andrew Roberts, who watched from side stage in the theatre.

Can’t wait to see them on the DVD!

RAID at the State Championships!

RAID States Team 2012

The final weekend of July saw the biggest event of the Irish dancing year so far – the South Australian State Championships. The event sees the best of SA Irish dancers battling it out for the title of “State Champion” and for the chance to qualify for the World Championships, to be held in Boston next Easter. Simply competing at States is a huge achievement as dancers must have reached a certain level in competition before they can attend States. The competition was held at the MacKillop Performing Arts Centre in Gawler, the generous stage giving plenty of room for the dancers to strut their stuff. We were lucky to have a live musician playing for the duration of the weekend, Sean O’Brien from the UK. Our Adjudicators were Raymond Ayres, Eileen Mulcahy and Leanne Halloran who all traveled from interstate.

The Roberts Academy was very proud to have our largest States Squad yet, with over 30 dancers taking part over the course of the weekend. These dancers ranged in age from 6 right through to 28, with many first timers alongside our more experienced “old hands”.

Saturday focused on the Solo dancing, with dancers showing of their technical and intricate footwork. Our dancers had been working for weeks (if not months) in the lead up to States to perfect their steps and did an amazing job on the day. The school was very proud to have three Solo State Champions this year – Trinity, Daniel and Gerard. The huge smiles said it all, though I’m not sure which prize they were happiest with – the massive trophy or the teddy bear! We had plenty of other fantastic results too, with 10 dancers placing in the top five, and six dancers heading home with a coveted World Qualifier Medal.

It was also great to see the support network and team spirit with dancers and families helping each other get ready, warming up together and cheering for their fellow classmates. Many of our dancers also enjoyed the on-site shopping, swamping the new vendor selling personalized States clothing!

Sunday was Teams Day, with hundreds of young dancers taking part in traditional Ceili and modern Choreography and Figure sections. The RAID camp was a sea of blue, black and white, with dancers in their matching team costumes and parents decked out in the school colours. Special congratulations has to go to our very youngest dancers who were taking part in teams for the first time and did a fantastic job. We also must take the chance to give a special mention to our Ceili only dancers – Dylan, Tegan, Amanda, Rose, Aishlynn, Michael, Isobel, Nina, Tessa, Brodie, Maddie, Giordana and Karlee. Some of these dancers traveled all the way from Darwin just for Ceili, showing great commitment and team spirit.

Teams Day saw a few more great results with the school taking away three team State Titles. This year’s Under 11 Mixed Four Hand (Dylan, Gerard, Trinity and Caitlin) successfully retained the title from last year. Also in the Under 11 section, our Mixed Eight Hand were practicing with Andrew right till the very end, and it paid off! Dylan, Gerard, Niamh, Tessa, Giordana, Trinity, Maddie and Caitlin were the very proud winners of the school’s first Eight Hand title. And lastly – Connor and Shannon put on a great performance with an entertaining Two Hand Choreography, placing first in the tough Under 16 Mixed Two Hand section. This achievement made all the greater when you consider one dancer lives in Darwin and the other in Adelaide!

Sunday ended with the highlight of the State Championships – the Parade of Champions! All solo State Champions are welcomed back to the stage together for an exhibition step about, where each Champion gets to show off with one last step for the crowd. Our three champs all had their favourite steps picked out and ready to go for the inspiring show of South Australia’s talent.

Roberts Feis to be held April 29th

The Roberts Academy are excited to announce that we are hosting a second feis in 2012 (in addition to the Southern Stars Championship). This will be held on April 29th at Thomas More College. Our adjudicator is Mary Grantham, ADCRG who is joining us from Melbourne.

This is being run mainly to give those dancers in the grades an extra opportunity to get up on stage and maybe get another first to grade their dances to the next level. Every effort is being made to keep the cost of the feis down for parents as we know how expensive Irish dancing can be!

Solo Sections: $4
Trophy Sections: $5
Hall Levy: $8 per family

The venue is the same one used for last years Southern Stars Championship, giving us plenty of room in the main hall, and an upstairs practice area for dancers to warm up. The raised wooden stage will be laid with AIDA flooring for dancer’s safety and comfort.

As usual, the parents of the Roberts Academy will be running a Canteen over the course of the day to keep hungry parents & dancers happy!

We hope to see you there for a fun feis!

St Patrick’s Day Shennanigans!

As usual, the Roberts Academy had a busy St Patrick’s Day weekend, taking part in Adelaide’s St Patrick’s Day parade as well as several dancing displays around the city at the Irish Club as well as Aged Care homes.

Our dancers were up bright and early on Saturday morning to meet in the city for the parade. We were honoured to be following Adelaide’s Rose of Tralee hopefuls. The parade winds along Gouger Street & King William Rd, stopping traffic along the way. Our dancers looked great in costume and entertained the crowd along the way with their dancing. Our first display for Saturday took place in a packed out Irish Club, with the audience having to squish back to make room for us! All our dancers were met with great applause.

It wasn’t all hard work though, as we found time in between to chill out with friends! All in all another fun and productive St Patrick’s Day for the Roberts Academy.

RAID dancers as Flag Bearers at Gaelic Football

Several of our young dancers had the honor of attending St Mary’s oval on Sunday to act as flag bearers for the Gaelic Football finals.

The dancers lead the teams onto the oval pre-match, carrying the Irish tri-color for the Irish and Australian National Anthems.

Connor and Lauren are shown with the Women’s teams for the afternoon match, while Aishlinn & Bernie were in attendance for the earlier men’s match.

New site launched

After several weeks of work, we have now migrated the entire RAID website over to the new servers & updating system. It may look pretty much the same as it was before, but the work we’ve done is going to make it much easier to keep the site up to date!

Keep an eye on the blog for the latest RAID News and info. And to all our RAID dancers and families – don’t forget to log in and check the Members Only Area regularly, as that is where we keep you up to date with key school info such as feis entry details, upcoming displays, class cancellations and other important news.

RAIDing the Remarkable Rocks

Ever wondered what your teacher & classmates get up to on their Christmas holidays? Take three Irish dancers to one of Australia’s natural wonders, and of course, they will dance on it. This fun video was shot on location at the Remarkable Rocks, Flinder’s Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island.

And guess what – we even got featured on the website for the Irish Independent – Ireland’s largest selling daily newspaper!
